Please join us in welcoming one of our newest members to PRSA Las Vegas Valley Chapter, Stephen Miller! Stephen, who serves as Public Information Officer for the City of North Las Vegas, has over 30 years of experience in Corporate Communications, Public Relations, Broadcast Journalism, and Event Management, including internal/external communications, media relations, social media, content creation, broadcast writing, public speaking, client relations, on-air television and radio proficiency, fundraising and corporate events, and donor relations.

Stephen joined the U.S. Air Force after high school graduation in Connecticut as a Radio & Television Broadcast Journalist, where he spent his entire Air Force career overseas in the Azores, Turkey, and Belgium. “Other than being a pilot, I do believe it was the best job in the military. I interviewed royalty, leaders of countries, world-renown musicians, and more,” he shared. “Living in Europe gave me the longing to travel more and try new things, so I moved to Las Vegas, a place that was a world away while growing up in Connecticut. I had never even visited. My broadcast career continued as a Special Projects Photojournalist at KVBC Channel 3, and then after a stint at Fox 25 in Boston, I made the seemingly natural jump to public relations. I’ve been lucky enough to gain PR and Communications experience in the agency, utility, and non-profit sectors.”

Stephen joined the City of North Las Vegas in October 2024. “My career theme of being very fortunate has continued here. My beats include Parks and Recreation, the Library District, City Clerk and the Grants Department, all of which give me the opportunity to tell positive, compelling stories. I’m also the PIO for some internal departments, including Human Resources, Information Technology and Finance,” he said. “It’s been a tremendous work environment, especially as North Las Vegas continues to grow. We have fantastic amenities for the entire Southern Nevada community, including a renovated amphitheater at Craig Ranch Regional Park that hosts state-of-the-art concerts and performances for up to 10,000 people. What I enjoy most about my day is finding those stories that are inspirational, educational and entertaining, and how they can impact our community.”

Stephen’s career has taken him from broadcast journalist to working for a PR agency, an events company, a nonprofit organization and a public utility, and now local government. We asked him to share more about his career journey through his diverse experiences.

“Going back to middle school, I knew I always wanted to be a journalist. I auditioned to get the sole position in New England for the timeframe I was looking to join the Air Force. Radio and television broadcasting was everything I had hoped – deejaying morning radio, shooting TV news stories and then anchoring the local newscast,” he said. “That passion carried on to Channel 3 as I was able to work on stories that made a difference in people’s lives."

“The shift to PR was challenging, as expected, but one that I am grateful to have tackled. The various industries for which I’ve worked all have different PR needs, tactics and strategies. Agency PR was a great introduction for me because I had clients in everything from entrepreneurship and entertainment to a Strip hotel/casino. I loved having to change gears multiple times throughout the day to focus on a different client,” he added. “Working at Opportunity Village was truly a cherished time for me. The organization was so well-known in the community and my roles expanded beyond just PR to fundraising event management. My favorite part of the day was taking people or groups on tours around the campuses, introducing them to the amazing people served by the nonprofit.”

And in his current role?

“I get to be creative, proactive, and cultivate partnerships with some of the amazing organizations around the Las Vegas Valley," he said. "One thing I learned a long time ago is that, although this is seemingly a large metropolitan area, it really is a small community.”

What advice does Stephen have for communications professionals looking to grow their careers or community involvement?

“Being a part of our community is vital to success as a communicator. Once you volunteer at any of the outstanding charities in the area, you realize that there are much bigger issues than any daily drama in the C-suite or your individual silo. This gives you a chance to network, understand what’s happening in the community and even offer your services or expertise where they’re needed,” he said. “In terms of career growth, it’s important to know that there is always more to learn. The ways we communicate, with the community, clients, businesses and neighbors, are changing faster than ever before. We must be able to adapt to new technologies and strategies.”

We’re so grateful you have joined the Las Vegas Valley Chapter! What does being part of the PRSA community mean to you?

“I’m excited to meet new communicators, learn from them and hopefully offer some of my own experiences in a helpful way,” he said. “I want to build meaningful relationships with public relations professionals in the many different industries around Las Vegas. The city has grown since I moved here in 1999, but one aspect that remains the same is that who you know can have a major impact on your professional and personal life.”
