Q: What are your hobbies?
A: I enjoy outdoor or physical activities primarily. I love golfing, cycling, or hiking/walking. I also enjoy attending live sporting or music events, and going to the gym.
Q: What does PRSA mean to you?
A: It really helped shape my career. It has provided a network of colleagues – and ultimately friends – to draw upon and discuss items, both professional and personal. It’s also a tremendous resource for professional development to sharpen your skills. Achieving APR status was a milestone. I would encourage everyone to pursue accreditation. PRSA provides a platform to advocate and/or weigh in on important policy, communication and ethical issues, inside and outside our industry.
Q: What was the most notable moment of your career so far?
A: I like to build great teams or bolster existing teams. Seeing those teams come together and/or supporting a colleague early in their career and watch them develop and grow to their full potential is exceptionally rewarding. I’ve been a part of some amazing teams and it’s an honor to have worked with so many talented individuals. Related to specific PR/marketing campaigns, it’s hard to pick just one: Promoting Las Vegas with the mayor and the showgirls in five cities – Barcelona, Cologne (Germany), London, Paris, and Rome – over a 12-day period for “NBA Europe Live” was amazing; UNLV hosting the final 2016 presidential debate was incredible; Marketing the Rolling Stones locally for their stop in Las Vegas as part of their World Tour was a thrill; Walking 1,000 feet below Lake Mead to see first-hand the construction of a new water intake tunnel – to communicate the importance of a reliable delivery of water for Southern Nevada – was both eerie and fascinating. (It was like being in a dark cave with a drizzle coming from the tunnel ceiling.)
Q: Why did you decide to enter marketing/communications?
A: It wasn’t ever on my radar, frankly. I had worked in the media throughout my college career and for short period thereafter, and realized I wanted to try something different. I came to Las Vegas and my first job was for a non-profit radio station (KUNV Radio). I sold underwriting to (then) Nevada Power Company, and shortly thereafter, they offered me a job in corporate communications. Nearly three decades later, I’m still in the field. I have a colleague who owns an advertising/communications agency and she reminds me of the incredible jobs and opportunities I’ve had in my career, and she’s right. Maybe someday I’ll write a book and share the behind-the-scene stories. There are many.
Q: What is the most profound lesson you have learned in life so far?
A: A mentor of mine once shared advice he had given his daughter, “You are not entirely your own person. You owe parts of your life to others, just as they do to you.” I revisit that theme periodically. So many individuals have contributed to my life and career, and to my success. I will forever – and always – be grateful. That advice helps me stay grounded and appreciative of everything I have and reminds me to give back as well. “Pass forward” as the saying goes.
