PRSA ICON 2026 brought PR and communications professionals from across the country together in Orlando to explore emerging trends, industry challenges and the evolving role of our industry.

A recurring theme throughout the conference was the growing importance of trust, credibility and human judgment in an increasingly complex communications environment.

AI was a major focus, particularly its influence on media relations, content development and how audiences discover information. While AI presents opportunities to improve efficiency and strengthen research, credible earned media, authentic storytelling and trusted relationships remain essential. As AI-generated answers increasingly shape public perception, ensuring our information is accurate, consistent and discoverable is becoming an important part of reputation management.

Sessions on crisis communications and reputation emphasized the need to distinguish meaningful issues from online noise, recognize misinformation before it spreads and make thoughtful decisions about when and how to respond. Building trust requires more than statements. It requires transparency, credible evidence and meaningful action. Other sessions explored executive media training, data storytelling, empathy and leadership, reinforcing the importance of tailoring messages to different audiences, communicating complex information clearly and developing confident spokespeople throughout an organization.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway was that public relations continues to evolve beyond generating coverage and managing messages. Our role increasingly involves interpreting information, advising leadership, building relationships and helping audiences understand not  just what an organization says, but what it does.

Regardless of industry, the fundamentals remain the same: understand your audience, ask better questions, communicate clearly and back up your words with action.
