In late August, two Roanoke, Virginia TV journalists were murdered on air while broadcasting a live news report. Their attacker then began using social media to post videos from the attack. Some media outlets chose to distribute the footage in its entirety. Others refrained from doing so, or used heavily edited versions or still images.

This crisis, like any other, brings to focus the ethical quandaries sometimes faced by public relations professionals and journalists in carrying out their responsibilities.

September is Ethics Awareness Month at PRSA, and we've brought together Las Vegas area professionals to explore and discuss "Ethics and Crisis Communication" and other related topics. Dr. Benjamin Burroughs, Assistant Professor of Emerging Media - Dr. Burrough's research focuses on streaming media and technology, media industries and digital media. Other research interests include sports media, social media and digital journalism. His work has been published in journals such as New Media and Society, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, International Journal of Sport Communication, and Games and Culture.

Frank Geary, Journalist - Geary has worked as special projects writer for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, including long-term investigative projects as well as staff coverage of law enforcement, the court systems and county and state government. He is the winner of nurmous journalism awards, including reconition by the Nevada Press Association.

Nicholas Vaskov, Attorney - Vaskov is currently counsel to the Nevada System of Higher Education. He has previously worked on behalf of Snell & Wilmer, Kummer Kaempfer Bonner & Renshaw, and the City of North Las Vegas. He is a graduate of the UNLV - William S. Boyd School of Law.
